Busy First Year

By , December 21, 2005 11:09 am

What have the Friends of Lindsborg Library done for the Lindsborg Community Library? They have put up displays, decorated the year round tree, purchased mannequins, donated videos, recycled newspapers, bought books, and purchased DVD’s, and added two church library collections to our computer system so that we can know where to direct patrons to find special books in town. They have painted walls, cleaned, planted flowers, dusted, and sewn. They have photographed, cooked, written grants, and brought in pumpkins of all sizes for Halloween decorations. They have read for Storytime, purchased new toys for the toy room, and for the children’s books for the outreach program in English and in Spanish. They have promoted the Library, donated their time and effort, joined the Chamber of Commerce, and visited other libraries to promote ours. They are truly Friends!

Meeting the Challenge

By , December 2, 2005 11:44 am

The Friends of the Tonganoxie Library have been enjoying a successful year. The group applied for and received a Challenge Grant from Friends of Kansas Libraries in March, 2005. Their goal was to increase their active membership by promoting the Friends of the Library to newcomers.
When asked to comment, Sharon Moreland, Library Director stated, ”To date, we have a wonderful new logo, awesome canvas bags that we’ve been selling (embroidered with this new logo) and library card holders that are included with the city’s Welcome Bags. We have increased our overall membership and have recruited some great new ‘active’ members.”
Yet to be done is a promotional brochure to recruit additional members. It will include photos, a fund raising events calendar, and FOL history. How can so much be done to advertise and attract members for your Friends? Enthusiastic Friends of the Library in partnership with FoKL can help. The application deadline is February 15, 2006. For more information see the FoKL website at www.fokl.net and select FoKL Challenge Grants link.

READY, SET, GOING!

By , November 4, 2005 8:53 am

Carbondale Library received a start-up grant from FoKL in May of 2004, The grant was used to promote a kick-off event for the Friends of Carbondale Library. Mr. David Leamon, director of Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library, spoke at the kick-off on July 11, 2004.

Door prizes included book baskets featuring free breadsticks with purchase of large pizza from Casey’s.

Following the kick-off event the group has held a book sale, a concessions stand, a holiday open house and cookie bake off, and a book swap.

Goals set for 2005-2006 include purchasing magnets with library hours, and purchasing an “open” sign for the library.

Events are already planned for the remainder of 2005 and 2006, and a web site is in development.

WAY TO GO, FRIENDS OF CARDONDALE!

If you know of a group who would like to organize a “Friends” see the FoKL website, www.fokl.net for details.
