Challenge Grants Awarded 2005

By , April 7, 2006 9:19 am

The Friends of Kansas Libraries recently awarded Challenge Grants to Friends groups in Kansas. Atchison Library, Bonner Springs Public Library, Ottawa Library, and Mary Cotton Library in Sabetha were all awarded the grants.

Each library requested funds to accomplish projects planned with assistance from their Friends organization. Atchison is raising community awareness of library programming by hosting a silent auction and luncheon with a local author. Bonner Springs will be sharing information with assistance from Friends of the Library prior to a vote on funding for a new library facility. Ottawa’s project includes a local history effort that involves editing video recordings of Ottawa’s Main Street and its citizens. Mary Cotton Library is promoting a new microfilm scanner by involving the community in a publicity contest. Each grant was funded based upon creativity, planning, potential benefit to the library, and active involvement of the organization.

Busy First Year

By , December 21, 2005 11:09 am

What have the Friends of Lindsborg Library done for the Lindsborg Community Library? They have put up displays, decorated the year round tree, purchased mannequins, donated videos, recycled newspapers, bought books, and purchased DVD’s, and added two church library collections to our computer system so that we can know where to direct patrons to find special books in town. They have painted walls, cleaned, planted flowers, dusted, and sewn. They have photographed, cooked, written grants, and brought in pumpkins of all sizes for Halloween decorations. They have read for Storytime, purchased new toys for the toy room, and for the children’s books for the outreach program in English and in Spanish. They have promoted the Library, donated their time and effort, joined the Chamber of Commerce, and visited other libraries to promote ours. They are truly Friends!

This service is for our current members. Has your Friends group joined for 2005-2006?

Meeting the Challenge

By , December 2, 2005 11:44 am

The Friends of the Tonganoxie Library have been enjoying a successful year. The group applied for and received a Challenge Grant from Friends of Kansas Libraries in March, 2005. Their goal was to increase their active membership by promoting the Friends of the Library to newcomers.
When asked to comment, Sharon Moreland, Library Director stated, ”To date, we have a wonderful new logo, awesome canvas bags that we’ve been selling (embroidered with this new logo) and library card holders that are included with the city’s Welcome Bags. We have increased our overall membership and have recruited some great new ‘active’ members.”
Yet to be done is a promotional brochure to recruit additional members. It will include photos, a fund raising events calendar, and FOL history. How can so much be done to advertise and attract members for your Friends? Enthusiastic Friends of the Library in partnership with FoKL can help. The application deadline is February 15, 2006. For more information see the FoKL website at www.fokl.net and select FoKL Challenge Grants link.
